Learning outcomes

The student is able to

Implementation and methods of teaching

The study course is integrated with the other study courses of the 3rd semester.
Independent learning takes place using reverse learning methods in the form of online learning tasks and team meetings.
In online workshops, you will study in real time and under the guidance of a teacher, together or in small groups.
On campus days, we will study at the Lahti and Lappeenranta campuses using phenomenon-based learning methods.

The study course is mainly carried out online. The face-to-face teaching consists of three campus days and five online workshops.
Online workshops, preparatory tasks for online workshops, skills workshops and possible preparatory tasks, Moodle proficiency tests and Moodle exam.

Timing and attendance

The course is scheduled for weeks 7-22.
There is an obligation to attend upcoming days/workshops. Compensation for absences is agreed with the teacher.

Learning material and recommended literature

The material in Moodle and the literature announced at the beginning of the course.

Exam retakes

The dates of exams and competency tests are announced at the beginning of the study period.
The course assignments and exams must be completed by the given dates. Exam retake times and assignment return times are announced in Moodle.

Other times are not possible.
The course will take place in the spring of 2025 for the last time.

Learning environment

Online and campus learning environments. The skills workshops related to the course are implemented on the campuses.

Student time use and work load

The scope of the course is 3 credits, which corresponds to 3 x 27h = 81h of student work.
Of this, approximately 1 ECTS or 27 hours consists of joint meetings and 2 ECTS or 54 hours of the student's independent and small group work.

A prerequisite is completed studies in the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system.

Assessment criteria

Return of preliminary assignments, Moodle proficiency tests and Moodle exam, and participation in workshops.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student can:
- make sure to take into account factors related to aseptic work methods and patient safety when working in the surgical department and understand the role of the physiotherapist as part of a multidisciplinary team
- take into account the effects of the patient's injury or surgical procedure on the patient's ability to function and general condition
- knows how to assist and guide the patient's movement after a surgical operation

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

- knows how to guide the patient in individual exercises after an injury or surgical operation
- knows how to plan the patient's rehabilitation process according to the ICF model after a surgical operation

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

- knows how to guide the patient in individual exercises after an injury or surgical operation in accordance with evidence-based physiotherapy practices

Online workshops, preparatory tasks for online workshops, skills workshops, Moodle proficiency tests and Moodle exam.

The study course is mainly carried out online. Face-to-face teaching includes limb fractures and prostheses, spine fractures and orthopedic surgeries, a case workshop on campus, i.e. 3 x 4h/group. There are 5x2h online workshops.

Mandatory attendance at workshops. Completing the course requires attendance and participation in teaching.

During the course, the development of competence is supported by the completed studies of musculosceletal anatomy and physiology. And same time or earlier completed Pain course and Musculosceletal physiotherapy.
