Implementation and methods of teaching
There are seven times of contact teaching, two hours at a time, of which there is one time of face-to-face teaching. Otherwise, the course is conducted online (ZOOM). The studies include lectures, independent and group assignments, and a Moodle exam.
Timing and attendance
The course will be implemented on 1.2. - 3.5.2023 mainly as an online implementation. Attendance at contact teaching sessions is recommended.

Learning environment
The course includes one face-to-face teaching session at the Lahti campus. Six other contact sessions are carried out online, on the Zoom platform. Other material included in the course can be found on the Moodle platform of the course at the beginning of the course.
Student time use and work load
Most of the studies are carried out independently and through group assignments. There are 14 hours of face-to-face teaching. The rest of the workload is distributed as follows:
- Preliminary assignment 10 h
- Workshop and preparation for it 50 h
- Group work 20 h
- Midterm exams and final exam (+ preparation) 40 h
Contents
The course introduces the entire water supply chain, and the student gets an overall understanding of the importance of sustainable, safe and economical water supply. The course introduces various factors affecting the quality of surface, ground, waste and industrial water. The course covers the most common techniques, especially those used in wastewater treatment, and their suitability for removing various harmful substances. An important point of view is the possibilities of circular economy principles as part of the water supply sector, as well as the effects of climate change on it.

Assessment criteria
The course is evaluated on a scale of 0 to 5. The student must successfully complete at least enough of the tasks and exams determined at the beginning of the course so that the total score is at least 50 points.

The student can:
- tell about the operating principles of the municipal wastewater treatment plant at a general level
- recognizes the meaning of different unit processes and process diagrams
- tell about the aspects related to wastewater analysis
- tell about the different components contained in wastewater and their cleaning/utilization options
- identify risks caused by wastewater and their prevention methods
Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)
Student:
- knows the operating principles and cleaning goals of the municipal wastewater treatment plant
- can take into account the factors that must be taken into account when dealing with community and industrial waste water - dimensioning principles of unit processes
- understand the general process diagrams of the wastewater plant
- knows the basics of wastewater analysis and the principles of measuring different parameters
- can interpret measurement results - the environmental effects of the different components contained in wastewater and their utilization potential
- can assess the risks caused by wastewater and their prevention methods
Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student can:
- the operating principles of the municipal wastewater treatment plant and the importance of different factors in achieving the cleaning goals
- the effects of various industrial wastewaters on water treatment processes
- the principles of sizing unit processes and read the plant's process diagrams
- methods related to wastewater analysis and the principles of measuring different parameters
- the environmental effects of the various components contained in wastewater and their utilization alternatives
- analyze the risks caused by wastewater and their prevention methods
