Contents

Student learns to apply mechanics skills in the dimensioning of machine elements and to identify the most common machine parts and their applications, selection criteria and advantages and disadvantages (e.g. screw connections, gears, shaft connections).
The student learns to use standards and norms in the design of the machine element.
The student learns the meaning of fatigue as a form of damage to a machine element and to identify related dimensioning methods.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Previous knowledge: Fundamentals of mechanics and strength of materials, statics, rotational motion, power. Solving a pair of equations and a polynomial function. Trigonometric functions and the Pythagorean rule.

Assessment criteria

The overall grade of the course consists of the combined result of the exam and the laboratory/exercise work. The weightage of the exam is 50% and the laboratory/exercise work is 50%.
Both of the above must be separately approved (min 50% of the maximum points)

Assessment scale

1-5

Failed (0)

Does not meet minimum criteria

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Minimum competence. Student is able to repeat what has been learned and remembers most of the most important factors affecting the dimensioning and selection of machine parts.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Good competence. Student is able to apply what he/she has learned to most practical subjects. Remembers the most important factors affecting the dimensioning and selection of machine parts.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Excellent competence. Student has ability to adapt what they have learned to many new applications. Remembers the factors affecting the dimensioning and selection of machine parts extensively.
