Implementation and methods of teaching

Face-to-face guidance, lectures and company visits. Exercises and course development projects will be carried out in cooperation with projects or working life.

Learning and resource materials will be announced and shared during the course in the course's Microsoft Teams group.

Alternative completion methods

The alternative delivery method must be justified, negotiated and agreed separately with the lecturers responsible for the course (Ari Känkänen and Sami Hyyryläinen).

Working life cooperation

All course assignments and development projects will be carried out in cooperation with projects or companies.

Exam retakes

Any possibility to repeat the course must be separately justified, negotiated and agreed with the teachers responsible for the course (Ari Känkänen and Sami Hyyryläinen).

Learning environment

1) Face-to-face teaching and tutoring: LAB Lahti campus (Mukkulankatu 19).
2) Separately arranged virtual meetings in Microsoft Teams / o365: Product Development Studio 2025 20 cr
3) Course feedback: integrated Spark course feedback (opens 2 weeks before the end of the course, closes 2 weeks after).

Student time use and work load

The 20 credits of the course are built up through 540 hours of total work. In terms of time, the work is divided into 448 hours of guided face-to-face or virtual activities (4 days/week) and 92 hours of independent work, as determined by the student.

- Approximately 60 % of the time is spent on practical exercises.
- Lectures, visits, guidance discussions and multidisciplinary workshops together about 40%.

Contents

Teaching is integrated into design product development projects in collaboration with companies and projects, where students work in small groups and workshops under the guidance of the teachers and company mentors responsible for the activities.

Expert lectures, company and event visits will support the knowledge content required in the projects, e.g. innovation processes, roles/tasks involved in product development, product cost planning, product domain specific requirements (testing, standards, etc.), project management and product development presentation methods.

Prior approved studies:
Expert Communication Skills, Visual Design Tools, Presentation Techniques, Introduction to Design, Ergonomics and Accessibility and Product Design Studio.

Prerequisite CAD skills:
* Rhinoceros 3D (basics) or/and SolidWorks 3D (basics) or basics of equivalent modelling software.
* 3D wireframe printing, basics.
* Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign software (basics) or similar software.

Assessment criteria

Practical exercises, attendance in accordance with the timetable, active participation in interaction and activities on all the days indicated in the timetable.

Evaluation on a numerical scale of 1-5. If assignments are returned late, the grade will be reduced by one point.

Too many absences (more than 20% of lessons).
Compulsory exercises not completed.
Poor teamwork skills.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Intermediate teamwork skills
