During the course, participants will engage in an international workshop, focusing on collaborative group participation, critical deliberations on the potential and constraints of the photographic medium within contemporary culture, its relevance, and how the students see their own practice in relation to contemporary issues and an international art scene. Implementation and methods of teaching

Building competence requires active presence throughout the course. Attendance is compulsory at the starting day and the last day of the course. Timetable: Found at TimeEdit, the daily programme of the course will be indicated at the beginning of the course.

The course will be taught face-to-face on campus, mainly on Mondays. The teaching day will usually always include a 1.5 hour zoom-connection with the University of São Paulo students.

Student time use and work load

On average, 5 x 27h = 135h of work are required to achieve the desired level of competence. The total number of hours is divided between face-to-face teaching, as indicated in the timetable, independent work and teamwork.

Contents

The course provides an introduction to looking into of megatrends and new phenomena of various fields, and to working in an international team to come up with forward-looking concepts for sustainable development.

The course will cover some methods of futures thinking and ideation and teach how to detect change around us.

The essential purpose of the course is to learn to look at the field from outside your own bubble, to get to know and network with students from outside your own culture and to learn more about their culture and ways of working.

Assessment criteria

The grade will be based on attendance, activity during the campus days, the level of completion of the learning tasks.

Persistent participation as an active member of the team as well as the completion of independent tasks on your own initiative within the timetable is a priority. Peer assessment of teamwork by students will also be part of the final grade.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course investigates what the theme 'sustainability' means for visual communication design. The problem is that sustainability is a buzzword - and rightfully so - but it has not been properly dissected in our industry. Designers are by nature very attuned to the problems of the world. But often fail to translate this standpoint to something that can be communicated as an extra value that we bring to the table.

5 aspects of sustainability from a visual communication designer’s perspective:
- Research themes: material matter + digital sustainability + social sustainability + environmental aesthetics + designer's ethics
- Students form research focus groups, study together and then present findings
- Presentation is sharing and questioning knowledge. It is prime learning time. Debate culture is also cultivated.

We will present findings to our design community and make the questions, findings and musings present and relevant.
These themes will be collated into an exhibition presentation made and curated by you. The exhibition project is worked on during a one-week long intensive, international workshop at campus.

In addition to above, we will cover printed publication technical basics such as material knowledge, printing technology, preparing work for print and a visit to a print house.

Designing, developing, and making a professional personal portfolio through collaborational learning.

- Student is required to collect and organize all the designs / works in one place / file (online) before starting the course.

- Student is required to work and develop the portfolio outside the contact hours. Contact hours can be also used for photographing the design works if necessary.

Contents

The course is targeted especially at Packaging and Brand Design students. It is suitable for exchange students in related fields, for example, Graphic Design.

During this course, a student learns to compare various professional and international online portfolios and platforms as well as international projects (especially competitions) in an open and dialogic environment.

The student will be guided to which design contest to participate in. There will be a few options to choose from.

For the portfolio, the student can choose the base style, form, and platform that fits the best for her/his/their professional needs. Usually, students build an Adobe portfolio during this course, but it is not a must.

During the international project (competition), the student practices organizational, time management, and presentation skills.

Through the course, the student will learn to express professional goals and articulate his/her/their personal design identity. As a result, the target is that the portfolio and the project will reflect the student’s creativity and personal interests and demonstrate clearly the student's skills and abilities as a designer.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Note:
- The course is not about teaching and learning any specific platform or software to build a portfolio. The teacher will act as a coach or a guide, and the students need to learn to use the chosen platform on their own. Usually, the portfolio platforms are quite easy to use and students learn them on the go.
- Illustration, Photoshop and ArtiosCAD skills are not mandatory but preferred!

The course is passed with minimum grade:

- If the student has showcased some kind of a professional portfolio to the teacher and peers and spent at least 135hours working on the projects
- If the student has taken part in some type of design competition
- If the student has somewhat taken part in the course. Participation less than 80% is accepted in particular cases only and negotiated with the teacher beforehand

Note: Participation includes also giving feedback on other students' works and portfolios.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The course is passed with good grades:
- If the portfolio is well published and the assigned design competition outcome is good
- If the student has actively taken part in the course with a positive attitude (participation, exercises/homework and contact hours 80%)

The course is passed with excellent grades:
- If the portfolio is published and is remarkable (good grades in peer review, competition work is included, team project is included, etc. )
- If the competition assignment is well documented and designed, and the outcome is excellent/successful

The course will be taught face-to-face on campus, mainly on Mondays. The teaching day will usually always include a 1.5 hour zoom-connection with the University of São Paulo students.

Student time use and work load

On average, 5 x 27h = 135h of work are required to achieve the desired level of competence. The total number of hours is divided between face-to-face teaching, as indicated in the timetable, independent work and teamwork.

Contents

The course provides an introduction to looking into of megatrends and new phenomena of various fields, and to working in an international team to come up with forward-looking concepts for sustainable development.

The course will cover some methods of futures thinking and ideation and teach how to detect change around us.

The essential purpose of the course is to learn to look at the field from outside your own bubble, to get to know and network with students from outside your own culture and to learn more about their culture and ways of working.

The grade will be based on attendance, activity during the campus days, the level of completion of the learning tasks.

Persistent participation as an active member of the team as well as the completion of independent tasks on your own initiative within the timetable is a priority. Peer assessment of teamwork by students will also be part of the final grade.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course investigates what the theme 'sustainability' means for visual communication design. The problem is that sustainability is a buzzword - and rightfully so - but it has not been properly dissected in our industry. Designers are by nature very attuned to the problems of the world. But often fail to translate this standpoint to something that can be communicated as an extra value that we bring to the table.

5 aspects of sustainability from a visual communication designer’s perspective:
- Research themes: material matter + digital sustainability + social sustainability + environmental aesthetics + designer's ethics
- Students form research focus groups, study together and then present findings
- Presentation is sharing and questioning knowledge. It is prime learning time. Debate culture is also cultivated.

These themes will be collated into a publication, a design object made and curated by you. The publication is worked on during a one-week long intensive workshop at campus.
We will then present these findings to our design community and make the questions, findings and musings present and relevant.

In addition above, we will cover printed publication technical basics such as material knowledge, printing technology, preparing work for print and a visit to a print house.

Designing, developing, and making a professional personal portfolio through collaborational learning.

- Student is required to collect and organize all the designs / works in one place / file (online) before starting the course.

- Student is required to work and develop the portfolio outside the contact hours. Contact hours can be also used for photographing the design works if necessary.

Contents

The course is targeted especially at Packaging and Brand Design as well as Industrial Design students. It is suitable for exchange students in related fields, for example, Graphic Design.

During this course, a student learns to compare various professional online portfolios and platforms as well as international projects (especially competitions) in an open and dialogic environment. After benchmarking and comparing, the student makes individual decisions. The student can freely select which design contest or project to participate in. For the portfolio, the student can also freely
choose the base style, form, and platform that fits the best for her/his/their professional needs. Usually, students are building an Adobe portfolio during this course, but it is not a must.

The student can concentrate on a portfolio for applying for student exchange, for seeking a summer job or a training place, or making a generic designer portfolio, easily alterable for current and future purposes.

During the international project (competition etc. , the student practices organizational, time management, and presentation skills.

Through the course, the student will learn to express professional goals and articulate his/her/their personal design identity. As a result, the target is that the portfolio and the project will reflect the student’s creativity, personal interests, and will demonstrate clearly the student's skills and abilities as a designer.

Actually, the portfolio will be a part of the student's own personal brand.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Note:
- The course is not about teaching and learning any specific platform or software to build a portfolio. The teacher will act more like a coach or a guide, and the students need to learn to use the chosen platform on their own.
- Illustration and Photoshop skills are not mandatory but preferred!
