Implementation and methods of teaching

The course provides students with a broad introduction to different publications and publishing platforms. They will learn to identify the main differences between publications and to design appropriate visual communication solutions. The course is structured around four themes: teaching packaging design modelling software (ArtiosCAD) during the intensive week, sustainable packaging, printed publications and digital publications. Each theme includes supporting exercises to be carried out both in groups and individually.
This course should be taken as a whole.
The course is part of the second year advanced professional studies in Visual Communication Design.

Timing and attendance

During the course, students will be divided into two groups: group 1 and group 2. Groups follow their own schedules.

The course starts right at the beginning of the academic year with a one-week intensive course on packaging design software. The attendance rate for the intensive week is 100%. The intensive week will include exercises which the student will continue independently after the intensive week.

The course is taught in class throughout the autumn. In the early autumn.
80% compulsory attendance.
During the face-to-face days, teaching takes place on campus and learning also takes place through interaction with fellow students. It is therefore important to be present in the classroom the whole day.

Student time use and work load

An intensive week at the beginning of autumn, involving independent tasks with a few weeks of return time.
Otherwise, the period of contact teaching will take place throughout the autumn, when the group will have other studies in progress. Students should ensure that they follow their own group timetable and the timetable for the return of assignments. Groups may have different timetables and different rhythms of teaching and assignments.
The course has many smaller assignments to be handed in. Students should ensure that they return assignments on time.

Contents

During the course, students will learn about the different media of publishing and familiarise themselves with them through exercises and lectures. Topics include print publications, electronic publications and packaging design. Students will be introduced to the physical materials of both print publications and packaging design on Materials Day. The printed publication section will include a folding exercise and the electronic publication section will include an exercise to deepen the knowledge.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

First year Basic studies in graphic design must be completed.
