Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is carried out as a face-to-face course, consisting of theoretical lectures, software lessons, presentations and discussions. In addition, students will work independently, both individually and in groups.

Timing and attendance

The course is scheduled for the first half of the spring semester. The course has a 60% attendance requirement. Absences from theory lectures (3) must be compensated with extra work. In addition, the absence of the last session can be compensated.

It is not possible to retake the course (there is no exam).

Mukkulankatu campus and the course's Moodle platform.

Student time use and work load

The 135 working hours of the 5-credit course are divided as follows: 20 hours of theory lectures, 30 hours of other face-to-face teaching, 85 hours of independent and group work ( nearly 3 weeks!).

Contents

The course introduces the history of information design, the grammar of information design, human perception, different types of information design, and the use of Adobe Illustrator and RAWGraphs software for information visualization.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

A basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator (or equivalent) would be an advantage.

Assessment criteria

Assessment based on coursework, presentations, activity and attendance. In addition, self- and peer-assessment for group work.

Students will receive a failing grade if they do not meet the attendance requirement, have not completed all course assignments within the given time limit or have not met the learning objectives of the course.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Students will be able to search for data, convert it into a visually understandable format and present it in an appropriate way. Students will be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student knows the basic principles of information design well and is able to evaluate information design products analytically. Students will be able to search for relevant data, transform it into a visually understandable and interesting format and present it in an appropriate and meaningful way. Students will be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student knows the basic principles of information design convincingly and is able to evaluate information design products analytically. Students will be able to search for relevant data, transform it into a visually understandable and interesting format and present it in an appropriate and professional manner. Students will be able to work fluently both independently and as part of a team. The minimum attendance rate is 70%.

Timing and attendance

The course runs over nine weeks between 14.9. and 8.11. and consists of 8 days of face-to-face teaching. Absences from the theoretical lectures (3) must be compensated by additional tasks. For other face-to-face teaching, 50% attendance requirement. Participation in the first meeting of the course is mandatory.
