Students must complete make-up assignments for absences. The teacher does not provide replacement assignments for absences - the students are accountable for making up missed absences independently. They must inform the teacher of any absences and propose a plan for covering missed content. For frequent absences, the completion of the course must be renegotiated with the teacher.

Book Binding (4 credits)


Students
- know how to describe the role of binding in the structure of a book
- know how to recognise various binding styles and their special characteristics
- know how to use a suitable binding style for each book
- know how to bind a book using their chosen method

In this course, students will learn how to bind a book using a method of their choice, identify different binding components, justify the use of various binding techniques, and understand the importance of binding in the overall structure of a book. As the course progresses, students will also explore additional bookbinding methods and their specific uses.

The course is divided into two parts, which together provide a comprehensive learning experience:
1) Part one (Studio Portfolio 1) includes an orientation day and independent work, during which students prepare for the bookbinding workshop by producing and submitting the required materials.
2) Part two (Studio Portfolio 2) features a workshop where students learn the fundamentals of bookbinding. Initially, students will bind a draft book using a guided technique, followed by binding their own book using a method of their choice.

Assessment criteria

The assessment will be based on the completed book (50%), participation (25%) and reflective skills (25%), and will be graded on a scale of 1-5. 

The emphasis on book work is 50 percent.

The student has been absent for more than the 80% attendance allowed. Assignments have not been returned.

The student's participation in classes and the returned assignments indicate that the student has mastered the course content. The student has binded a book, but the final result would require further work.

The active participation of the student in the lessons and the assignments they have completed show that they are engaged in their own work and in the content of the lessons. The student has been able to choose book binding methods appropriate to the book project and to complete the work as an entity.

The course is carried out face-to-face and consists of theoretical lectures, presentations and discussions.

The course runs for the whole academic year. Face-to-face meetings 2 times per semester. 50% attendance is required for successful completion. Absences cannot be compensated.
