Implementation and methods of teaching
The course introduces you to different drawing techniques, tools and materials, and to drawing as an art form. In addition to perception-based exercises that teach you how to capture proportions, form, space, light and shadow effects, the course also introduces you to drawing as a vehicle for your own emotions, ideas and creative thinking. Broadly speaking, the course is divided into two parts. The components may be structured in different ways in different implementations.
Drawing of a live model
This course introduces the students to the drawing of a live model and gives them practice in drawing human proportions, varying the pace, style and medium of drawing. Longer exercises will practice measuring a human being and using different tools to describe a human being. The fast-paced exercises include drawing in a hurry and depicting a person in motion. In addition to depicting the proportions of a person and the pose of a model, the course also includes exercises in depicting form using a variety of shading techniques and depiction methods..
Perception and expression
The course will explore different drawing methods, techniques and materials. The aim of the course is to broaden the student's understanding of drawing and its expressive possibilities. The exercises emphasise perception-based work, but also approach drawing from a purely expressive perspective. The emphasis is on contemporary art without forgetting the history of art. The course will introduce students to artists who use drawing in their art. The teaching will consist of various exercises and free-form critical discussions designed to practice discussion and analysis of one's own and others' art.
It is advisable to bring as many different types of pencils and sketchers as possible. The quality of the drawings does not have to be good or of “artist quality”. Everyone should also have a sketchbook of about A4 size at the start of the course. Work will take place in classrooms and on the campus.
Timing and attendance
The course requires attendance at the Lahti campus and cannot be taken remotely. Attendance at tutorials and joint reviews is also a requirement for the course.
Alternative completion methods
The course cannot be completed other than by attending classes at the Lahti campus.
Exam retakes
If a student does not obtain a pass in a course, he or she must repeat the course the following year.
Learning environment
Work will take place in classrooms and on the campus area.
Student time use and work load
The course cannot be taken remotely. Attendance 80%.One credit is equivalent to 27 hours of work for a student. A total of five credits is about 135 hours of study.
