Implementation and methods of teaching

The Artist and Society course consists of online lectures given by experts in the field of art. They will cover the work of the artist from the perspective of different organisations and professional artists. The lectures are set in a social framework.

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the working life of the arts and the main organisations and institutions in the field. Students will also become familiar with the different aspects of the artist's job description and the social framework that guides the profession. The course will also cover typical funding and pricing systems in the sector.

The course is delivered by attending lectures and writing a summaries on the lecture content. Writing guidelines can be found on Moodle.

Timing and attendance

The lectures take place in the autumn semester and consist of about ten lectures. Absences must be made up by researching and writing independently on the subject of the lecture. The maximum number of substitute assignments is two.

Learning material is updated on Moodle on a lecture-by-lecture basis.

Alternative completion methods

Acceptable performance requires attendance of lectures and writing of papers. Absences from lectures are limited.

Exam retakes

The course includes the writing of 10 summaries on the content of the lectures. You may be absent from lectures 2 times. However, absences must be compensated by searching for information on the lecture topic and writing a paper on it. If there are more absences it is recommended to start again the following autumn.

Learning environment

Online lectures and Moodle website. The website provides information on the dates and topics of the lectures and other instructions.

Student time use and work load

One credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of study. The total number of hours in a lecture series is therefore about 57 hours, consisting of attending lectures, possibly doing exercises during lectures and writing papers.

Contents

The lectures aim to provide basic information about being a professional artist in society. The lectures are divided into two main parts. The one aspect of the lectures is about artist position in the society and the second aspect is about artist work and the new forms of work. The course consists of lectures by key figures in the professional artist's environment.

Learning outcomes of the course

The student is able to

- describe the main organizations in society and the environment in which the artist works.
- explain the basic principles of financing art.
- identify the different fields of activity related to the artist's profession.
- write a logical and structured text on the main themes of the lectures.
- to follow the guidelines for writing a report in terms of content and presentation.
- make reasoned and factual comments on the topics of the lectures.

In fine art studies, the course is recommended to be taken during the third year.

Assessment criteria

Attendance at lectures, writing and returning summaries before the end of the course, and any other assignments given in accordance with the course timetable, and achievement of the course objectives.

The text of the summaries should be in the form of a broadsheet, in factual style and written in the student's own words. Where appropriate, references should be used. The text should be positioned according to the guidelines on the Moodle.The teacher responsible for the course may ask the student to complete the assignment.

The student is not able to demonstrate his/her skills in a committed way and within deadlines:
- The student does not attend lectures.
- Summaries are not returned before the end of the course.
- The papers are not written in the student's own words.
(Copying source material for use as a presentation is not permitted under the lecturer's copyright.)
- The content of the paper is not related to the course content and is not related to the profession of visual artist.
- The length of the references does not correspond to the assignment.
- The writing and positioning guidelines for the text have not been followed.
- The text contains plagiarism.
- The text is not written in a factual style or contains unsubstantiated opinions.

Assessment criteria: assessment scale failed/approved

Students will actively participate in online lectures and write summaries on each lecture. The summary is based on a logically progressive lectionary text on the topic of the lecture. The lecturer may ask the student to complete the texts in order to meet the objectives and guidelines of the course. In their written reports, students:

- Identifies the actors in society who are part of the artist's environment.
- Understand the basic principles of funding for the arts.
- Identifies the social spheres of action related to the profession.
- Can evaluate the aspects and challenges related to the artist's professional life.
- Can write a logical and structured text on the main themes of lectures.
- Follows the content and formal guidelines for writing a report.
- Can make reasoned and factual comments on lecture topics.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student

- Participates in the introductory meeting on the course guidelines.
- Attend at least 8 lectures and return a summaries for 10 of them.
- Can write a summary on the content of the lecture and follow the guidelines for text presentation.
- Returns the texts before the given end date of the course.
- Can describe the professional content of lectures.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student
- attends the introductory meeting on the course guidelines.
- attends at least 8 lectures and writes a summaries on 10 lectures.
- follows the guidelines for text positioning and returns the texts before the given end date of the course.
- is able to write a logical and structured report on the content of the lecture in relation to the profession of artist.
- can describe the lecturer's view of society in relation to the artistic profession.
- be able to describe aspects of the financing of work.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student
- attends the introductory meeting on the course guidelines.
- attends at least 8 lectures and writes a summaries on 10 lectures.
- follows the guidelines for text positioning and returns the texts before the given end date of the course.
- can write a logical and analytical report on the content of the lecture in relation to the profession of artist.
- can describe the social vision of the lecturer in relation to the profession of artist can describe and analyse the different contexts in which the visual artist works
- can describe the different perspectives on the financing and pricing of work.
- Can present their own reasoned views on lecture topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The Artist and Society course consists of online lectures given by art experts. Lectures are relate to the artist’s work from the perspective of organizations as well as professional artists. The framework of the lectures is social.

The purpose of the course is for the student to get to know working life in the field of art as well as the main organizations in the field. The student also learns to understand the aspects related to the artist's work and identifies the social framework that guides the profession. The student also gets to know the typical financial systems in the field.

The course is completed by attending lectures and writing summaries on the content of the lecture. Writing instructions can be found in Moodle.
