Contents

Course objectives:

-to gain an understanding of the text genres in higher education

-to understand the importance of reading texts in one's field as part of the development of professional and writing skills

-to develop the use of reading strategies appropriate to the different types of texts

-to be able to identify the linguistic characteristics of academic texts

- to be able to identify and distinguish between different types of texts in higher education

-learn to produce academic text genres

Scientific Writing in Finnish (S2) is intended for students whose mother tongue or language of education is not Finnish.

- use simple reading strategies
- identify some linguistic features of academic texts
- search for and read texts related to their field of study
-produce academic texts in a guided way

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to
- identify higher education text genres
- use most reading strategies
- identify linguistic features of academic texts
- search for and read texts related to their field of study
-produce academic texts

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to
- identify all higher education text genres from the course
- use reading strategies for difrent purposes
- identify linguistic features of academic texts & understand their purposes
- search for and read texts related to their field of study from several reliable sources
-produce fluent academic text
