Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- identify and use the course vocabulary and phrases for common everyday situations
- tell about oneself and understand basic questions
- read and write simple sentences related to the course topics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Contact lessons on Zoom as well as independent studying.
Please note: Written exam and oral exam face-to-face with the teacher on campus.

Timing and attendance

- The course will be organized during one period.
- Active participation is required.

Material provided by the teacher. The material is available in Moodle.

Zoom and Moodle online learning platform

Student time use and work load

3 credits corresponds to approximately 80 hours of study.
Classes approx. 28 hours.
Independent study, including homework and learning assignments, and preparing for exams, approx. 50 hours.

Contents

The course content will be the following:
- greetings
- introduction and personal details
- questions and answers
- numbers and alphabet
- countries, languages, nationalities
- pronunciation
- verb type 1, present tense
- genitive case
- at the café.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

No previous Finnish skills required.

Assessment criteria

Ongoing evaluation and written and oral exam to evaluate, how well the student can
- write in Finnish
- understand Finnish texts
- understand Finnish talk
- speak in Finnish.

Assessment scale

1-5

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has reached the learning objectives at a satisfactory level.
Student
- recognizes and can use some of the phrases studied in the course
- recognizes and uses some numbers in Finnish
- tells about herself/himself by few sentences
- can recognize and use few of the words studied in the course
- can write few sentences in Finnish on one of the topics of the course
- pronounces Finnish quite understandably.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has reached the learning objectives well.
Student
- understands and can use many phrases
- knows the numbers in Finnish
- tells many things about herself/himself
- understands and uses the basic vocabulary studied in the course
- can write many sentences in Finnish
- pronounces Finnish quite understandably.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student has reached the learning objectives in an excellent way.
Student
- understands and can use all or almost all phrases studied in the course
- knows the numbers in Finnish
- tells about herself/himself in quite versatile way
- understands and uses vocabulary studied in the course quite extensively
- writes a short text in Finnish on given topics
- pronounces Finnish quite well.
