The student is able to

- recognize different means of promoting participation in democracy
Implementation and methods of teaching
- Voluntary work (54 hours) in local/national/international organization (including training of the organization), 2 ECTS
- Lectures and group discussions, 1 ECTS
- Individual assignment and group assignment 2 ECTS
Timing and attendance
The course is realized during the period 10- - 10.5
The students starts the voluntary work and essay-writing according their individual schedules. The international students will be informed about this prior to their arrival.
Participation in contact learning sessions is compulsory.
Timing of contact learning is:
- 29.8; 8-11
- 2.10; 13-16
- 6.11; 8-11
- 4.12; 8-12

The study material will be given to the students prior to the time.

There are no alternative ways to complete the course.
Working life cooperation
2 ECTS -points voluntary work in co-operation with the actors of the local 3rd sector.

An essay, written assignment + a group presentation, online exam

After having completed the course, the student knows the key concepts of promoting participation in civic society. He/she has gained work experience of voluntary work at social sector and understands its' meaning as part of the service provision in civic society.
Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student acknowledges various concepts of promoting participation in civic society. He/she understands the different ways, in which the voluntary organizations work as part of the service provision in civic society, particularly in Finland and can distinguish its advantages and disadvantages.
Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student is able to use new knowledge of promoting participation in civic society. He/she
can create new, innovative ideas towards developing voluntary organizations as part of the service provision in civic society in Finland and elsewhere.
