Osaamistavoitteet

Students are able to communicate fluently in meetings, negotiations and discussions and they are familiar with meeting documents and proceedings.

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

Scheduled classes (a double class once a week) online via Teams until November 2021. After that, depending on the epidemic and regulations, classes on campus. Blended learning, both online and in-class studies. Theory and practice. Self-study, pair and group work.

Ajoitus ja läsnäolo

Students are expected to attend 75% of classes (online and on campus) and actively participate in the learning activities. The compulsory assignments must be completed by the given deadlines.

Oppimateriaali ja suositeltava kirjallisuus

All materials are provided through Moodle by the teacher.

Oppimisympäristö

Student workload is equivalent to 3 credits (80 hours) spread evenly during the autumn term (13 weeks).

Sisältö

- language of negotiations and discussions: formal vs. informal style, active listening, expressing opinions and arguments, agreeing and disagreeing, compromising, clarifying, summarising, etc.
- introducing a topic (a brief presentation)
- formal meeting procedures: chairman's and secretary's roles; opening, ordering, voting and closing; documents (agenda, minutes and memo)
- case studies, simulations and role-plays
- panel discussions

NB. The above is a tentative list of contents. The teacher reserves the right to introduce changes.

Intermediate to upper-intermediate level skills in spoken English (e.g. CEFR B1/B2)

Arviointimenetelmät

Continuous evaluation: regular attendance (75%) and active participation in exercises, successful completion of writing tasks. Test: at the end of the course, students' skills are evaluated in a meeting and a panel discussion, which are arranged in small groups.

The student speaks in a style vaguely appropriate to the tasks. The student interacts minimally with participants. Performance meets a few of the set expectations of given tasks. The student speaks in a vaguely consistent manner. Delivery is minimally structured. Linguistic performance is minimally accurate and appropriate to the context. Pauses are rather long and at times pronunciation hinders comprehension.

Arviointikriteerit: taso 3 (arviointiasteikko 1-5)

In most cases, the student speaks in a style appropriate to the given tasks. The student interacts with participants. Performance meets most set expectations of given tasks. The student speaks in a consistent manner. Delivery is structured. Linguistic performance is somewhat accurate and appropriate to contexts, although short pauses and hesitations may occur.

Arviointikriteerit: taso 5 (arviointiasteikko 1-5)

The student speaks in a style appropriate to given tasks. The student interacts fluently and competently. Performance meets all set expectations for given tasks. The student speaks in a clear, concise, and consistent manner. Delivery is well-structured, intentional. Linguistic performance is accurate, appropriate to the context, and speech tempo is natural.
