The student is able to
- describe the primary functions of packaging
- describe the structure of the packaging industry and discuss the role of a packaging designer from the point of view of the industry stakeholders
- design the form and graphic appearance of a package
- build a fibre-based model of a package design

Implementation and methods of teaching
Instead of a lecture type of teaching, this course is more about interaction, learning by doing, making mistakes and succeeding, alone and together. As a member of a group, the student learns to design a packaging entity. During the course, the student designs a primary packaging ( a bottle) and a secondary packaging (a corrugated or a carton box based on standards).
The student will learn the basics of the packaging process through practical exercises. The teaching is based on contact hours and guidance of the small groups/ student pairs. The student is required to have an open mind and skills for working in a multidisciplinary group as well as a hands-on attitude.
Timing and attendance
Active attendance during contact hours and commitment to group/pair work. (absences should be informed beforehand for the teacher and the group

Student time use and work load
Besides the contact days, the student is required to work independently and in a group outside the contact hours. The groups/pairs will agree on the roles and the details on the group work outside the contact hours. Taking part in the kick off and presentations is mandatory.
Contents
During the course, the student learns the main functions of packaging. The student gets also an understanding of the packaging industry field and the roles of a packaging designer. The student learns to design a packaging based on an industry standard.
Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.
The course is a packaging module. The other parts are:
MI00BM07-3004 Pakkausmuotoilun materiaali- ja mallinrakennustyöpaja (vain PAMU opiskelijat), (Packaging model making)
MI00BQ69-3003 Typografian perusteet pakkausmuotoilussa ja brändäyksessä, (Typography in packaging and branding) and
AM00BW74-3001 Pakkausgrafiikka ja painatusprosessit (Packaging graphics and printing processes).
During the course the students use for example Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat. Also, the students get to know ArtiosCAD. Previous software knowledge is not a must but is an advantage. Please note that this is not a software course. Also, 3D design software can be used, such as Rhinoceros independently if the students have previous 3D modeling skills. The groups/pairs are aimed to be multidisciplinary so that the students can support and complement the skills of each other.
