Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- define the phases of the development process of functional products
- work according to the principles of a need-based design process
- design functional products
- recognize different functional materials and choose suitable materials for different purposes
- explain the principles of outsourcing products in their chosen field

Implementation and methods of teaching

Research- and product development project which is connected to Amer- project.
Lectures, independent working and supervised working. Project is done in pairs.

Contents

The goal is to learn how to design functional clothing using user centered design method.
The purpose is to get acquainted with special needs which are needed in outdoor activities and active sports clothing, especially winter sports. The object of the course is to professionally design an outfit/concept for a given outdoor activity and to present the result for a client.
The purpose is also to get familiar with materials and accessories used in active sports clothing.
Pattern making, sizing and technical structures are important aims of the course. We are going to make block patterns for functional clothes and use them when patterning the designed outfits.
The designed outfit will be manufactured during the course.

Assessment criteria

Active presence on course and active participation to project.
Researches, interviews, moodboard, scrapbook, material choices, sketches and technical drawings regarding to design assignment are done acceptably.
Evaluation of patterning and manufacturing the designed outfit.
Final presentation of the project.
