Osaamistavoitteet

The student is able to
- recognize features of their own cultural values, assumptions and culturally specific behavior
- understand the existence of different cultures and the effect these cultures have on the national ways of thinking
- explain major intercultural theories and frameworks to understand differences and similarities between cultures

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

This course implementation will be carried-out in in-class, classroom lessons. Only 35 students will be taken into this course, into the classroom as per instructions stated by the university president (to ensure proper social distancing). The places will be filled based on the enrollment number and attendance at first contact lesson of the course. Attendance at first contact lesson is compulsory, if you wish to ensure a study place in the course (however, keep in mind the rule of 35 students max).

The course will include lectures, in-class practice tasks (critical incidences), case studies, and course assignment(s). This is a discussion-based course - voluntarily talking and voicing your opinion and views in class/group discussion expected. Compulsory attendance required for all lessons as much of the cultural learning will take place in classroom activities and in group discussions. Students unable to attend a lecture are expected to come prepared for next lecture (must read the lecture notes in Reppu (Moodle) and prepare the needed homework/tasks/activities). Attendance and active participation will play a role in the final course grade.

Ajoitus ja läsnäolo

Course is an intensive 6-week long course with lessons once a week, each lesson lasting four (4) hours. Attendance at all lectures compulsory. There are no substitute assignment(s)/work given.

Course material supplied by the lecturer. Other recommended course/topic-related material can be found in the course platform - Reppu (Moodle).

No substitute alternative completion method.

Uusintamahdollisuudet

No course exam. All course assignments must be done to complete the course. Improving (upgrading) course assignment grades not allowed.

Course lessons are carried out in the lecture room.The Reppu platform (Moodle) is used for course/lecture material.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

5 ECTS = 135 student work hours. Course incorporates both in-class lectures and classroom practice tasks/activities/assignments. Final course assignment (to be completed independently/pair/group) and completed alongside in-class lessons. The course requires independent work, individual/pair/group work and active participation.
