Learning outcomes

Students are able to
- describe the basics of Western visual arts, architecture and other visual culture, from prehistory to modern times
- use the research concepts of art history and visual culture
- view their professional field as part of artistic practice and the visual environment
- use their knowledge of phenomena in art history in their professional development and work.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Art History consists of on-line lectures, individual and group tasks. Course materials and tasks are informed in the course specific moodle learning environment.

Timing and attendance

Course schedule is published in Time Edit. Lecture specific activities are informed in the moodle. 85 % presence at lectures is expected.

Learning material and recommended literature

Study materials consist of lecture slides, digital materials and further reading recommendation published in the course specific moodle learning environment.
Hugh Honour and John Fleming: A World History of Art is the central text book used as a supporting material during the lectures.

Student time use and work load

Art History is a 5 ECTS credit study module. Expected time resource for a student is 135 hours including lectures, tasks informed and presentations given during the lecturer. The course ends when the last lecture is ended.

Contents

The course deals with art as historical and aesthetic phenomen from antiquity to present. The content is mainly European and Western and the time line focus is in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

This realization is primarily for LAB degree students of Industrial Design (ID) and Packaging and Brand Design (PAC). Students from those groups will have priority in enrollment!

No earlier knowledge or studies on art history is required.

Assessment criteria

Evaluation is based on course activity and tasks submitted and presented during the classes. Student is expected to make a self-evaluation and course feed back at the end of the course. There is no exam but a presentation at the end of the course.
