Objective

The student is able to
- identify the risk factors and treatment of the most common cardiovascular and respiratory diseases among the adult population as well as explain their impact on the client's physical ability
- describe the cumulative effect that different lifestyle and chronic diseases have on the physical ability and take into account its meaning for the client's physiotherapy
- apply typical physiotherapeutic research methods used in cardiovascular diseases and reliably analyze the measurement results in implementing safe physiotherapy
- plan individual and safe exercises and exercise guidance for the client basing on evidence-based data while taking into account the underlying diseases

Learning outcomes

The student is able to

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is implemented as a collaboration between Lahti and Lappeenranta. The studies include independent learning as well as collaborative learning in online and campus environments.

Timing and attendance

The course begins with independent study for the preliminary medical examination. The lecturer provides instructions before the exam.

The course will take place during the autumn semester of 2024 (weeks 40-51).

Students are responsible for independently studying the content of their missed sessions. Students demonstrate their competence through competency test and exams.

Learning material and recommended literature

The information will be provided at the beginning of the course on the Moodle platform.

Exam retakes

Will be agreed separately with the lecturer, considering the degree regulations.

Learning environment

The course is implemented in online and campus environments.

Student time use and work load

The scope of the study module is 5 credits, which corresponds to 135 hours of student work.

- Portion of the medical studies about 27 hours
- Collaborative learning in online and campus environments about 32 hours
- Independent study (including pre-assignments and preparation for competence tests) about 76 hours

Exam of the medical studies on the Moodle platform (Fail-K5)

Online test of the risk factors of lifestyle diseases (Fail-Pass)

Moodle test of the respiratory physiotherapy (Fail-K5)

Moodle test of the cardiovasculary physiotherapy (Fail-K5)

The grade of the course is formed by averages of sections.

The student is able to

- identify the risk factors of the most common cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, pathophysiology and their impact on the client's physical ability
- use safely typical physiotherapeutic research methods used in cardiovascular diseases and reliably analyze the measurement results
- observe respiration and guide the technique if needed
- use typical physiotherapeutic methods to intensify respiration
- describe the most common lifestyle and chronic diseases and cumulative effect on the physical ability
- know the basic principles of exercises related to lifestyle and chronic diseases

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student is able to

- analyze the measurement results of physical performance
- assess the physical ability of the client with cardiovascular disease and explain their impact on the client's physical ability and the quality of life
- assess how different exercise training can be utilized in the physiotherapeutic treatment and prevention of lifestyle-related diseases

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student is able to

- evaluate the evidence-based data related to lifestyle diseases and exercise training and apply it ti practical work
- comprehend the role of physiotherapy in prevention of lifestyle diseases and promotion physical activity
