Osaamistavoitteet

The students
- know how to design and create a typeface
- know how to operate type design software
- know how to describe the requirements for a feasible typeface

Toteutustapa ja opetusmenetelmät

Part 1. Students will do letter drawing assignments to learn type design skills on two intensive days at the end of the course. Student’s full attendance is necessary for this part. The font design software is only available at Institute of Design classroom computers.
Part 2. The main body of the course will feature exercises on the topics of readability and legibility when typography is applied with different fonts. The course will also investigate theories on how we read text and books. We will also delve deeper into the requirements of multilingual typography: what graphic designers need to be aware of, how typefaces are built to support different languages, and how to deal with multilingual design work.
The topics are discussed through lectures, guest lectures as well as small typography assignments.
All assignments must be completed to finish this course.

Minimum 80% attendance. Note that 100% attendance is required for the intensive days.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

Main deliverables on the course will be completing Part 1 as well as the smaller typography assignments throughout the course. The lectures on theory are supporting the smaller assignments.

Sisältö

The course is divided into two parts:
1. Technical & fundamentals – understanding letterforms through drawing assignments and learning to use type design software;
2. Theory & applied – readability/legibility theory applied in small detailed typography assignments, and an overview of multilingual typography.

Lisätietoja opiskelijalle: mm. edeltävä osaaminen

Understanding of typography and applications are necessary for attending this course. All graphic design students must have completed the previous two typography courses. Previous experience of font design or font design software is not necessary.
