Blended online course. Online lectures and classes with 80% attendance required.

Contents

Students study professional terminology and texts, give a professional presentation, discuss topics in their field, practice job interviews and meetings, and study scientific writing. The course assignments are: a text project (finding a professional text, preparing it for others to read; reading texts of other students and reporting on them), reporting on an article or a project orally, writing a report in the style of a Thesis abstract, and a job interview. The aim is to integrate the course partly with some professional course so that some assignment(s) will be part of both the English course and the professional course and assessment is done by both the English teacher and the teacher of the professional course.

Assessment criteria

Written and oral assignments done during the course. The grade is also affected by the level of active participation, work input and cooperation skills (group and pair work). Part of the course may be integrated in a professional subject. Assessment on scale 1 – 5.

The student
- understands the main points of a simple professional text with the help of a dictionary
- is able to search for information if instructed
- understands basic professional terminology and concepts and uses them so that the essential message is clear
- can manage in a job interview if helped by the interviewer
- can participate in a meeting by observing and expressing what is essential about his own work
- can give a simple, understandable project presentation
- can write understandable reports and summaries.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student
- understands the main points and most details of a professional text without aids
- is able to evaluate sources and materials critically
- understands and uses general professional terminology and concepts fairly fluently and accurately
- can communicate fairly fluently in a job interview
- can participate in a meeting actively
- can present a project clearly and appropriately
- can write clear reports and summaries in a formal style.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student
- understands challenging professional texts
- is able to evaluate sources and materials critically, and to use a wide range of sources efficiently
- understands and uses challenging professional terminology and concepts fluently and skillfully
- can communicate effortlessly and convincingly in a job interview
- can participate in and chair meetings professionally and efficiently
- can present a project in a professional and convincing way using an appropriate style
- can write clear and well-structured reports and summaries in an appropriate formal style.
