Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- use concepts of multiculturalism
- describe the aims, objectives and services of Finnish immigration policy
- analyze the position and needs of ethnic and other subgroups
- support integration processes and culturally sensitive practices

Implementation and methods of teaching

The study unit is offered for the Finnish and exchange students and it covers the following:

1) Intercultural supervision (2 ects) will be integrated with the study unit Yksilö- and ryhmänohjaustaidot, evaluation scale excellent, good, satisfactory
A. option: Participating Outdoor education intensive week together with the Dutch students from AVANS University of Applied Sciences during the week 4
B. option: Supervising disabled persons in the Naapurit project

2) Contact learning (1 ects), evaluation pass-fail

3) Group assignment case management plan for an immigrant client (2 ects), evaluation scale 1-5.

Teachers: Tuula Hyppönen (TH), in the intensive week also Kati Ojala (KO) and three (3) AVANS teachers, Diveristy workshop Bea van Robayes (BvR).

Theme I: Intercultural supervision/ Outdoor education intensive week and preparations
Tues 8.1.20 at 10.00-12.00. Option A. For the students, who chose Outdoor education intensive week. Orientation to the study unit (TH).
Wed 9.1.20 at 9.00-12.00 Option A. For the students, who chose Outdoor education intensive week.Team formation and orientation to the intensive week (KO and TH).
kes 9.1.20 at 13.00-16.00 Option A. For the students, who chose Outdoor education intensive week. Team working (KO and TH).
Wed 15.1.20 at 9-16.Option A. For the students, who chose Outdoor education intensive week. Outward Bound Finland programme in skype and team working (KO ja TH).
Tues-Fri 21.-24.1.20 at 9-16.00 Option A. For the students, who chose Outdoor education intensive week. Intensive week implementation (KO, TH & 20 Lahti UAS students, teachers Bart Paiimans, IIse Hendricks, uusi naisopettaja jand 24 AVANS social work students).
Theme II: Immigration policy and services
Tues 11.2.20 at 8.30-12.00 For the students, who chose option A and B. Immigration policy (TH).
Thus 13.2.20 at 8.30-12.00 For the students, who chose option A and B. Immigration services (TH) > assignment 3. begins during the week 7.
Theme III: Diversity comptetence
Tues 10.3. 20 at 12-16 For the students, who chose option A and B. Diversity workshop (BvR).
Thurs 11.3.20 at 12-13 For the students, who chose option A and B. Diversity workshop (BvR).

Learning material and recommended literature

Study material will be given to the students at the beginning of the study unit.

Working life cooperation

Reflective diary and case management plan.

Learning environment

Orientation in contact teaching and in skype together with the whole student group, preparation in student teams, Outdoor education intensive week in nature environment, written group assignment and diveristy workshop. Teacher's supervision is available for the assignments.

Aims and objectives:
- the student recognizes characteristics of multiculturalism and its' challenges from both the perspective of society and an individual
- the students recognizes the situation of different ethnic groups and their participation in society at large
- the student knows integration related contexts and culturally sensitive practices.
