Learning outcomes

Students know how to
• differentiate between various typographic categories and describe their areas of use
• design typographical layouts and packaging graphics to support a brand
• use the means of typography in the design of multilingual packaging graphics.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is comprised of lectures, discussions and presentations, small design assignments during class, independent reading of the course book and the main assignment.
The main assignment will be to keep a typographic journal for the duration of the course.
If the situation requires, the course will be held online using moodle and zoom for lectures, discussions and assignment brief and presentations. The student must have computer access and preferably a licence for InDesign.

Timing and attendance

80% attendance required. If a student misses a class, the missed assignment needs to be completed during their own time.

Bringhurst, R. 2012. The elements of typographic style: Version 4.0. 4th ed. Seattle, WA: Hartley & Marks.

Course materials and other suggested reading can be found in the Moodle course area.

Learning environment

Classes will be held at Institute of Design campus, mainly in computer classroom. This course will use Moodle platform for materials, course assignments, sharing information and submitting course work.

Student time use and work load

Classes will be held over ten days, of which half are full days and the rest are half days. For 5 ECTS the classes comprise 40% of the students’ time.
The main assignment will be done on students’ independent working time, as well as reading the course book. All other tasks will be completed during class.

5 ECTS is 40% classes (lectures, small assignments), 60% independent work (typographic journal, reading)

Contents

Students will learn basics of typography, typographic styles and how to incorporate high-quality typography in their design practice. They will gain basic knowledge of InDesign typographic tools. The course book, lectures and small tasks will teach students about typographic nuances and skills needed.
Students will gain an understanding of how to implement typography into branding and what role typography plays in branded products.
The course also looks into multilingual issues from the perspective of language and typography, applying it to packaging design and branding work.

NOTE: The course is primarily for Packaging and brand design students!
Basic knowledge on InDesign is required, but no previous skills in typography are needed.
This course is suitable for all design students as a foundation course on typography in branded environments.

Assessment criteria

All assignments must be completed on time.
