Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- identify the principles and goals of designing different accessories
- apply accessory design principles innovatively in designing a new product
- identify and select appropriate materials for an accessory design assignment

Lectures and designer stories.
Studio and workshop visits.Not incl. during Covid-19.
Research and design project.

Timing and attendance

Building the know-how requires active participation, research and finishing the design project incl. workshop.
Participation during the first day as well as presentations are compulsory unless otherwise agreed with the teacher.

Student time use and work load

5 ECTS x 27h = 135h of work. The total hours are divided into lectures, tutoring, visits and independent work. 2021 including workshop.

Contents

Accessories design as a special field of apparel industry has a great impact on achieving sustainability goals.
Student will build understanding on the specialities of accessory industry by visiting studios of designers and independent producers. (not incl. in 2021)
Student will build know-how in accessory design (excl. shoes) as well as materials, technologies and production methods by the means of design concept development and concept collection.

Important aim of the concept is to create a user-centered collection with new, smart sustainable materials, production methods and alternative business models.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Requires basic skills in pattern cutting and sewing.

Assessment scale

1-5

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to
- create a moderate sustainable and user-centred capsule collection concept under guidance
- recognise a few sustainable materials suitable for accessories and his/her designs
- use a traditional manufacturing technique logically in his/her designs
- recognise one business model suitable for accessory business
- present his/her collection according to the instructions

Student is attending poorly (less than 80%) and is absent without informing the teacher.
Student hands in the presentation after the deadline.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to
- create a sustainable and user-centred capsule collection concept
- recognise and choose sustainable materials suitable for accessories and his/her designs
- use traditional manufacturing techniques in inventive ways in his/her designs
- recognise and develop an existing business model for accessory business
- apply the presentation tools independently

Student is participating actively and hands in the presentation within 7 days after deadline unless otherwise agreed with the teacher.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Student is able to
- create a professional level sustainable and user-centred capsule collection concept
- conduct a research of new sustainable materials suitable for accessories and his/her designs
- develop new manufacturing techniques and use them inventively in his/her accessory designs
- develop a new, alternative business model suitable for accessory business
- create a professional level presentation of his/her design ideas

Student is participating actively and hands in the presentation according to the schedule.
