Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- describe the basics of a publishing process and use industry terminology
- select a suitable format, scheme, typography, materials and binding for the publication
- describe the possibilities of printing methods and the effect of design decisions on the overall costs
- work with a printing house
- design production-ready publications for different purposes

Implementation and methods of teaching

Due to the current situation, the course meetings will be mainly via zoom. If the situation allows, we can work in the campus in small groups and have access to paper stock and such physical materials.
The main project will be to design a print-ready book. This includes a high-quality book design, layout, material choices, binding plan and preparing the publication for print. We will also cover printing techniques, how to work with the printing house, print-to-publishing workflow and touch on budget aspect of designing for print. We also discuss accessible design.

Timing and attendance

Minimum 80% attendance. Minimum 80% attendance. The course is scheduled to begin after the winter break.

Learning material and recommended literature

Course material will be published in the course Moodle.

Alternative completion methods

It’s possible to bring your own book design project to this course. That can mean your own book or designing for a client. But you must consider the size and schedule of the project if it matches this course. Speak with the teacher.

Working life cooperation

If possible during Spring, there will be a visit to a print house and discussions with industry people.

Learning environment

The course will take place mainly via Zoom. Also campus, visits to print house and other relevant places will be organized if the situation allows.

Student time use and work load

Part of the design work will take place during the individual study time. Design the book can be scheduled loosely around the students’ own plans but must be completed on time.

Contents

The student will learn how to design a print-ready publication and learnd to work with the printing house. They will design a book to high standard and understands how the nuances of materiality and reading experience effect not only the end result, but also the printing process and costs. They will design a print-ready file.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

The students must have either successfully completed the graphic design publication course and typography courses, or have similar skills in order to implement it within this class.
Due to the circumstances, all students working remotely need to have access to InDesign.
