Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- apply corporate social responsibility approach to leisure industry related service development
- evaluate and develop the responsibility of tourism and hospitality operations
- critically reflect on communication practices of sustainability and responsibility

Implementation and methods of teaching

The study unit is based on project-based learning. The learning methods also include online lectures and teaching discussions as well as independent studying, e-learning, case assignments and project work.

Timing and attendance

The study unit follows the scheduling of the development project (Sept. 3 - Dec. 4). Active participation in the online lectures and meetings, project meetings and other events are necessary.

Learning material and recommended literature

All materials will be given in electric form via moodle or collected and anlyzed, or produced, by students themselves.

No alternative methods of implementation. No individual solo projects.

Learning environment

The study unit is based on an authentic development project which is supported by other assignments and online lectures and teaching discussions.

Contents

The study unit belongs to a seamless study module of 15 ects where students complete an extensive service development project for a commissioner.
The study unit supports the project work via following themes: Corporate economic, environmental and social responsibility, sustainable tourism and hospitality, current topics in the field of responsible business related to the project at hand.
The student is obliged to participate two other courses of the module: Development of digital tourism services 5 ects and Asiakaskokemuksen ja kannattavuuden johtaminen 5 ects (mainly in Finnish, in case of an English speaking student, contact the teacher).
The study unit supports the project teams with a professional evaluation and implementation of environmental and social performance of a company/organization.

Assessment criteria

50% of the grade consists of the evaluation of the service development project, 40% of the case assignment and 10% of the introductory assignment in the beginning of the course. Evaluation is based on teacher evaluation, self evaluation and peer evaluation along with commissioner evaluation.

- shows ability to evaluate ethical and environmental performance of companies and organisations
- discusses the given topics and gives independent and critical arguments
- gives concrete recommendations for project commissioners to improve their environmental and/or social performance

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student
- shows ability to critically analyze ethical and environmental performance of companies and organisations.
- can validate his arguments coherently
- discusses the given topics on a professional level
- gives concrete, realistic and innovative recommendations for project commissioners to improve their environmental performance
