Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- communicate in common everyday situations
- write short and simple text connected with everyday situations
- master the basic grammatical structures of Finnish
- act, to some extent, in a Finnish community and in their phase of study by using Finnish.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The study module is carried out as contact classes, held once or twice a week (2 h each). In addition, the students will have do the different kinds of exercises given by the teacher.
Teaching methods: lectures, oral and written exercises and assignments, conversation, independent and team work, oral test, written exam.

80 % presence required.
Assignment deadlines and details on exam(s) will be given during the course.

Alternative completion methods

If you already have the required knowledge on the Finnish language and culture, you can take an exam (exemption test) to demonstrate your skills. Please contact the teacher of the course.

Written exam (provisionally): last contact class.
Possibility for a retake will be considered if needed.

Learning environment

Contact teaching will be carried out mainly in classroom. Surrounding neighborhood and e-learning are used when suitable.

Student time use and work load

5 ECTS = approx 135 hours of study, of which 33 hours (planned) as contact classes, in the rhythm of one or two 2-hour-classes per week
-> approx 102 hours of independent work (average: 13 h per week)

Learning objectives:
After passing the course, the student
• ... can communicate in common everyday situations in Finnish
• ... knows the most common Finnish vocabulary and phrases used in social interaction (informal discussion, telephone conversations, etc.)
• ... is able to write in Finnish a short and simple text connected with everyday situations
• ... knows the basic grammatical structures of Finnish
• ... can, to some extent, act in the Finnish society and in hie/her studies using Finnish.
The target level of the course is A2.1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for language learning.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

Previous knowledge/requirements:
Finnish for Foreigners 1 (3 ECTS) and Finnish for Foreigners 2 (5 ECTS) or equivalent skills

Assessment criteria

• attendance and active participation (minumum: 80 % presence in contact classes), including homework
• oral and written exercises, oral presentation
• spoken test passed
• written exam passed

Assessment scale

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student:
- is able to perform modest individual tasks in Finnish according to instructions: he/she can communicate in a limited manner in everyday situations and knows the most common vocabulary and phrases used in social interaction (e.g. informal discussions, telephone conversations etc.)
- has limited language and communication skills in Finnish and modest cultural knowledge with regard to the contents of the course.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student:
- is able to perform in Finnish typical tasks in different environments: he/she can, to some extent, act in the society and in his/her studies in Finnish
- can mostly apply the acquired skills to new communicative situations
- has good language and communication skills in Finnish, as well as cultural knowledge, with regard to the contents of the course.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student:
- is able to communicate in Finnish in various roles and environments: he/she can reasonably act in the Finnish society and in his/her studies in Finnish
- can easily apply the acquired skills to new communicative situations
- has strong language and communication skills in Finnish, as well as cultural knowledge, with regard to the contents of the course.
