Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- communicate in most common everyday situations
- understand slowly and clearly spoken Finnish provided the topic and the vocabulary are connected with their own life and experience
- understand the key idea of a simple message or text and write one by themselves
- master the most common vocabulary and some grammatical structures of Finnish.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The study module is carried out as contact classes, held twice a week (2 h per class). In addition, the students will have do the different kinds of exercises given by the teacher.
Teaching methods: lectures, oral and written exercises and assignments, conversation, independent and team work, group presentation (oral), written exam.

Timing and attendance

Contact classes will be organized during the second period, from 30th October to 4th December 2019. 80 % presence required.
Assignment deadlines and details on exam(s) will be given during the course.

Alternative completion methods

If you already have the required knowledge on the Finnish language and culture, you can take an exam (exemption test) to demonstrate your skills. Please contact the teacher of the course.

Written exam (provisionally): last contact class.
Possibility for a retake will be considered if needed.

Learning environment

Contact teaching will be carried out mainly in classroom. Surrounding neighborhood and e-learning are used when suitable.

Student time use and work load

5 ECTS = approx 135 hours of study, of which 22 hours (planned) as contact classes, in the rhythm of one 2-hour-class twice a week
-> approx 113 hours of independent work (average: 19 h per week)

Contents

Contents and topics of the course:
living and houses, shopping, traffic and travelling, months, weather and seasons, communication in everyday situations, verb types, 50 basic verbs, basic types of nouns and consonant gradation, partitive, nominative plural and local cases, possessive sentences

Previous knowledge/requirements:
Finnish for Foreigners 1 (3 ECTS) or equivalent skills

Assessment criteria

Attendance (80 % required) and active participation during the course, including homework. Delivery of the given assignments on time. Oral presentation and written exam passed.

The student does not reach the minimum requirements of the course. Failed delivery of given assignments and/or failed exam(s).

The student:

• ... understands the key idea of a simple written message or text in Finnish and is able to write one by him-/herself.
• ... knows the most common vocabulary and some grammatical structures of Finnish.
• ... has limited Finnish language and communication skills in relation to the contents of the course.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

The student:
