Learning outcomes
The student is able to
- recognize how culture affects the working dynamics and outcomes of multicultural teams
- identify and apply theories on the effect of culture in teamwork and leadership
- act effectively in multicultural teams
Implementation and methods of teaching
The course will be implemented via in-class discussions, in-class multicultural teamwork practice tasks, and a multicultural team project (charity project). Compulsory attendance required for all lessons (as much of the learning takes place in the in-class activities) and for the duration of the multicultural team project. The multicultural team project will require extensive team work outside of classroom lessons.
Timing and attendance
This course begins April 20, 2020 (Monday) and ends May 8, 2020 (Friday). The course is an intensive three-week long course, with morning and/or afternoon contact lessons. Course also emphasizes the incorporation/practice of the following transversal skills: social skills and self-leadership skills. Attendance at all contact lessons and throughout the duration of the multicultural team project (charity work) compulsory as most of the learning takes place in the classroom lessons/activities/charity work. No substitute assignments/work given for missed lessons (in-class tasks/group work/presentations).Missed lessons affect final course grade. Missed charity project work = fail course. This course is part of the EmploySkills project carried out at LAB.

Real-life charity project connects with work-life cooperation and supplies students with real-life experience in multicultural teamwork.

Learning environment
Course lessons will be carried out in the classroom. However, the multicultural team project, parts of it, will take place outside the classroom.
Student time use and work load
This 5 ECTS course means 27/ECT hours of student work. In total the course will require 135 hours of work per student. The course incorporates both in-class discussions, multicultural team work practice tasks - 28 hours in total in addition to a multicultural team project (charity work)- 107 hours (per student). The course requires active participation, independent work, and multicultural team work.
Contents
This course focuses on multicultural teamwork and leadership. Students will gain an understanding of how culture-related themes affect the working dynamics and outcomes of multicultural teams and leadership practices. The course develops the students' tolerance in cross-cultural settings and increases their ability to act effectively in multicultural teams, global organizations and cross-cultural environments via a real-life charity project.

The student understands, in practice, the theories and practices of team working, multicultural team working and leadership in teams. The student acknowledges the existence of cultural influences in multicultural team working and multicultural settings. The student completes multicultural team project, i.e., charity project.
Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student understands, in practice, the theories and practices of team working, multicultural team working and leadership in teams. The student acknowledges and applies his/her knowledge about cultural influences in multicultural team working and multicultural settings. The student actively participates and completes the multicultural team project, i.e., the charity project.
Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)
The student has excellent knowledge of theories and practices of team working, multicultural team working and leadership in teams and is able to utilize them both in the in-class activities as well as throughout the multicultural teamwork project. The student is able to recognize and apply his/her knowledge in cultural influences in multicultural team working and multicultural settings. The student actively participates and completes the multicultural team project, i.e., the charity project, professionally.
