Learning outcomes

Student
- learn how to make effective presentation boards and PowerPoints when submitting artworks for public art competitions.
- learn how to read or understand the goals of the client. What are the client's desires for the project? What are the limitations? What are the budgets? What materials might work best?
- learn how to analyze the site from different perspectives, such as the historical setting, social uses, the physical, haptic, sensory elements that surround and shape the place.
- learn to know artists who ar working in this field and how they approach the public space.
- learn how urbanists and town planners engage in empirical studies of public spaces and how their findings could have relevance for how artists approach public spaces from a broader perspective.

Implementation and methods of teaching

The course is designed to help students better understand the process of making proposals for competitions and commissioned public art projects. In the course we will deal with actual sites and situations where we will design artworks for specific locations, (primarily on the LUT campus, and in some cases, situations located off campus).
