Learning outcomes

Basic everyday words and phrases for complete beginners who will stay a short time in Finland.

Implementation and methods of teaching

Contact classes, independent work, oral test/assignment, written exam. Bring your own device!

Timing and attendance

Contact classes twice a week from 2nd to 17th Sep 2019 (6x 3 hours). 80 % presence required. Assignment deadlines and details on written exam will be given during the course.

Material delivered by the teacher (e-learning environment Reppu, BYOD).

Written exam at the end of the course. Possibility for a retake will be discussed if needed.

Student time use and work load

2 ECTS = approx 54 hours of study (of which 18 h as contact classes)
-> approx 36 hours of independent work (average 12 h per week)

Contents

Contents:
- introduction to special features of Finnish: grammar, spelling, pronunciation
- everyday phrases in common situations: greetings, introductions, shopping, eating out etc.
- numerals (numbers)
- expressions of time: days of the week, months, seasons, clock
- basic pronouns
- sentence structure: affirmative and negative sentences, questions
- conjugation of verbs in the present tense.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

No previous knowledge of Finnish needed.

Assessment criteria

Attendance (80 % required) and active participation during the course, including homework; oral test/assignment, written test.

Failed (0)

Failed attendance, oral assignment and/or written exam not passed.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Modest effort and level of oral assignment in relation to the contents of the course,
50-59 % of points reached in written exam.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Good participation and level of oral assignment in relation to the contents of the course,
70-79 % of points reached in written exam.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Strong participation and level of oral assignment in relation to the contents of the course,
90-100 % of points reached in written exam.
