Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- design, orchestrate and manage customer’s experiences
- create meanings and meaningful contents and solutions in tourism and leisure
- apply design and user-centrism in development of tourism, hospitality and leisure services and business

Implementation and methods of teaching

The study unit belongs to Leisure & Regional Development (15 ECTS) study module. It is recommended that the students enroll in all three study units Sustainability in Tourism and Leisure, Experience Design, and Holistic Approach to Well-being Tourism.

Experience Design study unit will consist of learning assignments executed in teams and individually. The assignments include
1) Usability analysis
2) A sensory walk
3) Project assignment in small teams

The evaluation will be based on a) knowledge and information retrieval skills, b) practical skills, and c) responsibility and reflection skills.

Students work for three commissioned development projects, and the teams will be formed on the basis of the students' professional interests. One student will be involved in one project. The RDI project Go Green Routes deals with user- and data-driven conceptualization of nature well-being service concept. The Go Green Routes project is about optimizing how nature is integrated into urban spaces and accessible leisure in nature. In the project, the students get to design and test the service concept and network with companies and other working life representatives in the region. The RDI project Konenäkö (machine vision) challenges the students to innovate new business models in making use of machine vision and AI in the field of tourism and events. The focus will be on a few business-driven concepts agreed with the commissioner. The RDI project Feeniks (Phoenix - Renew sustainably) is about supporting tourism companies and cultural organizations to revitalize and renew their business in an ecologically sustainable way. In the project, the resilience of the companies is strengthened, and the mental regeneration is supported by a corona-exit approach.

Timing and attendance

The study unit is offered only in contact/hybrid learning. The study unit starts on the 19th of January 2021 with a kick-off seminar. The first course-specific session is held on 27th of January. The lectures of Experience Design take place on Wednesday mornings at 9-12 between 27 Jan - 28 Apr. The study unit ends on the 4th of May with a closing seminar where all student projects & results will be presented. The student is expected to commit to teamwork and individual tasks.
According to the most recent guidelines of the LAB UAS, distance learning continues also in January 2021. The current Covid-19 approach to teaching and learning arrangements goes at least until 14 March 2021. It now seems that this study unit will be implemented remotely.

Learning material and recommended literature

The learning material will be announced at the beginning of the study unit, incl. books, reports, articles, blogs, videos. Partly the material will be retrieved by the student.

Alternative completion methods

No alternative ways of implementation. If a student is able to attend and take part in only one or two (and not the all three) courses of the module; please contact the teachers asap.

Working life cooperation

The study unit is connected to close collaboration with the Go Green Routes, Machine Vision (Konenäkö) and Phoenix (Feeniks) projects; in total 3-5 different case projects by the commissioners depending on the amount of enrolled students (15-30).

Student time use and work load

1 ECTS cr. equals 27 h of student's work. Accordingly, the study unit of 5 ECTS cr. equals 133 hours of student's work. The 1/3 of the workload comes from lectures and assignments and 2/3 of the workload consists of the project work to be conducted in teams and individually.

Contents

The study unit belongs to Leisure & Regional Development (15 ECTS) study module. It is recommended that the students enroll in all three study units Sustainability in Tourism and Leisure, Experience Design, and Holistic Approach to Well-being Tourism. In general, the study module focuses on synergies in combining leisure and regional development and addressing tourism as a vehicle for regional and individual well-being. In this study unit, the students advance from service design to experience design and familiarize oneself on the international discussion on experience design, customer experience and meaning making. Also, the study unit deals with integration of physical and digital interfaces into a seamless customer experience, and how to deliver a meaningful customer experience. In practice the students learn to apply the lessons learned in a concrete experience design project.
