Learning outcomes

The student is able to
- prepare and deliver business presentations in English
- become aware of different techniques used in presentations
- understand the role cultural aspects play in presentations

Implementation and methods of teaching

Online course. Students will work independently on studying the provided theory, as well as on creating and delivering online presentations on different topics. Students will also participate in three online meetings during the course. The focus is on preparing and giving speeches and professional presentations in English. No substitute work or assignments.

Timing and attendance

100% online course.
All assignments need to be submitted before their designated deadlines.
During the course, a student is expected to participate in 3 online meetings during weeks 37, 46, 48 (there are 2 different time options for each meeting). Participation is compulsory.

All course materials are provided via Moodle.

Online meetings are held via Zoom.

Student time use and work load

5 ECTS course, which means about 135 hours of student's work.
Student's workload consists of studying theory, watching video materials, completing written and oral assignments, participating in online meetings.

Contents

The course provides basic presentation and public speaking skills in English.
The main objectives are: creating and delivering professional online presentations in English; increasing presentation confidence by finding own presenting style; using different techniques and tools for online public speaking.
Contents: preparing and giving speeches and professional presentations in English: informative presentations, persuasive presentations, live presentations, impromptu speeches.

Additional information for students: previous knowledge etc.

No prior experience in giving presentations or speeches in English required.
Prerequisites: English for Work 4 ECTS. Intermediate to upper-intermediate level skills in spoken English (e.g. CEFR B1/B2, IELTS 6-6.5).

Assessment criteria

Continuous evaluation on scale 5 - 0.

Assessment scale

Failed (0)

Fail (=requires a retake). Inability to give basic coherent presentations in English. The student has not met the course requirements.

Assessment criteria: level 1 (assessment scale 1–5)

Missed several online lessons. All assessed presentations given. Ability to give basic presentations and reflect on the learning process.

Assessment criteria: level 3 (assessment scale 1–5)

Active attendance at all online lessons. All assessed presentations given. Ability to give professional and coherent presentations in English. Ability to create good slides. A good understanding of the various purposes behind presentations (inform, instruct, persuade etc.). Good body language and interaction with the audience.

Assessment criteria: level 5 (assessment scale 1–5)

Attendance at all online lessons. All assessed presentations given. Ability to give professional and coherent presentations in English. A very good understanding of the various purposes behind presentations (inform, instruct, persuade etc.). Ability to give presentations appropriate to the target audience. Ability to create quality slides to support presentations. Excellent body language and great interaction with the audience.
