The degree programme in Design, major in Furniture Design, provides graduates with the skills required in designer and expert roles, designing products and services for use in the built environment. Their tasks include the design of products and services for the furniture and consumer industry, and for the construction and forestry industry, and in customised special projects. The objects of design include, for example, furniture, components for the construction and forestry industry, products for living and working environments and their combinations, and promotion and sales environments.

The degree programme provides students with information on the management of design, manufacturing and outsourcing processes. A special alternative learning objective is the promotion of competence in wood materials and the related design capabilities.

The main emphasis in the degree programme is on user-centred design and a consideration of the challenges of sustainable development. User-centredness is approached through various design assignments, from the perspectives of the users' personal, social and cultural needs and wishes. The perspective of sustainable development enables a discussion of the changes in the demands of the existing environment, and a consideration of the requirements and challenges that the evolving social and cultural environment places on the designer's profession.

The degree programme mainly takes the form of various course assignments and cooperation projects with partnering businesses.

Bachelors of Culture and Arts (Furniture Design) find work as designers or experts in design agencies and industrial companies, or through self-employment. The degree programme prepares graduates for work in multidisciplinary expert teams that solve design challenges related to the built environment.
